# ThumbnailListView Class

This class represents a list view control, which displays a collection of items that can be displayed using one of four different views: thumbnails, simple list, details, icons.

**Namespace:** [Aurigma.GraphicsMill.WinControls](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/N_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls.htm.md)
 **Assembly:** Aurigma.GraphicsMill.WinControls (in Aurigma.GraphicsMill.WinControls.dll)

## Syntax

```
Public Class ThumbnailListView _Inherits VirtualListView
```

```csharp
public class ThumbnailListView : VirtualListView
```

## Remarks

ThumbnailListView control allows you to display list of items with text and an image to identify the type of item. The identifying icon depends on the control's current view mode and can be small icon, large icon or an item thumbnail. Small icons are displayed in the [Icons](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_View.htm.md) and [Details](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_View.htm.md) modes, large icons are displayed in the [Icons](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_View.htm.md) mode and thumbnails - in [Thumbnails](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_View.htm.md) mode. Appearance of the control is very similar to the Windows Explorer list of files, so users will have well-known interface.

The single list item is represented by an object which implements the [IListItem](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_IListItem.htm.md) interface. Graphics Mill for .NET has a [ThumbnailListItem](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListItem.htm.md) class which represents an implementation of this interface based on shell objects. Shell objects are represented by the [Pidl](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_Pidl.htm.md) class. They include a file system objects and some extra items such as special folder (*Desktop*, *My Pictures*, etc), USB storage devices, digital cameras, etc.

You can also implement this interface yourself. This way you can display items from a database, etc.

To get access to list items, use the [Items](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListView_Items.htm.md) property. If you need to get items which are selected, you can use [SelectedIndices](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListView_SelectedIndices.htm.md) or [SelectedItems](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListView_SelectedItems.htm.md) property. In the same way you can get checked items: just use [CheckedIndices](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListView_CheckedIndices.htm.md) or [CheckedItems](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListView_CheckedItems.htm.md) property.

The control exposes a large number of properties which allow you to change its behavior and appearance. E.g. possibility to display check boxes for each item ([CheckBoxes](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_CheckBoxes.htm.md)), multiple items selection ([MultiSelect](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_MultiSelect.htm.md)), drag-n-drop support, editable labels of items ([LabelEdit](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_LabelEdit.htm.md)), etc.

When you are using [Details](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_View.htm.md) view mode, you should set up columns using the [Columns](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ThumbnailListView_Columns.htm.md) property. You should fill it with instances of the [ListColumn](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_ListColumn.htm.md) class which identify what columns should be visible and what piece of data to display.

When you work with [Details](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/T_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_View.htm.md) view, you can use a number of handy properties. E.g. the [AllowColumnReorder](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_AllowColumnReorder.htm.md) property allows the user of your ThumbnailListView control to reconfigure the order of columns at run time. The [FullRowSelect](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_FullRowSelect.htm.md) property allows an item and its subitems to be selected instead of just the item. To display grid lines in the details view to identify the boundaries of items and subitems in the control, you can use the [Gridlines](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_Gridlines.htm.md) property. The [HeaderStyle](https://www.graphicsmill.com/docs/gm5/P_Aurigma_GraphicsMill_WinControls_VirtualListView_HeaderStyle.htm.md) property allows you to specify the type of column headers to display.
